One High School, Two Campuses

Welcome to the Sidney C. Huntington School and Galena Interior Learning Academy website

sidney&angelaSidney C. Huntington School is located in Galena, Alaska, a close-knit community of 700 people located on the Yukon River. We're 300 miles east of Fairbanks. We are home to 80 students from kindergarten through eighth grade, and 35 high school students. The Sidney Huntington School is named in honor of local Athabascan elder Sidney Huntington, whose life and support for youth education and activities provides example and inspiration for students. Sidney's life story is the subject of the book Shadows on the Koyukuk by Jim Rearden and inspiration for the play Winter Bear.

Our small town also hosts the Galena Interior Learning Academy (GILA), a 9-12 grade vocational boarding school. There are 35 high school students at the Sidney C. Huntington School and 200 students at GILA for a total secondary school population of about 235 students. We share both school campuses for high school students, providing a depth of teaching staff and course selection not usually found in a village school.

We're proud to announce that we are an Alaskan "school of choice" based on our continuing academic progress over the past eight years. Our students regularly show up at state competitions ranging from basketball championships to the Alaska state science fair.

Thanks for visiting us. Feel free contact us at any time. We'll try our best to make this a site parents, students, teachers and visitors will be proud to use.
