English I- Mr. Apfelbeck

This course is designed to provide students with a wide range of reading experience and to improve their overall reading skills and appreciation of quality literature.  Authors from all over the world are introduced.

Additionally, this course is designed to offer students the opportunity to improve their writing so that they will be able to confidently express themselves using the written word.

Students will acquire basic skills in both reading and writing as they progress through English I through English IV; these skills build one upon another, allowing students to acquire ever-increasing competency as they progress through grades.

Students will be evaluated based upon:  class participation, in class assignments and homework, quizzes and/or tests, as well as written products.

English II- Mr. Harris & Mr. Apfelbeck

This course continues the learning begun in the previous year in English I.

Students are provided with further reading experience and the opportunity to improve their overall reading skills and appreciation of quality literature.  Literary terms learned previously will be repeated and new terms will be introduced as the students read selected pieces of literature.  Authors from all over the world are introduced.

Additionally, students continue to be offered the opportunity to improve their writing so that they will be able to confidently express themselves using the written word.  Students are asked to demonstrate skills acquired in the previous year and to demonstrate newly acquired learning to produce longer pieces of writing.

Students will acquire basic skills in both reading and writing as they progress through English I through English IV; these skills build one upon another, allowing students to acquire ever-increasing competency as they progress through grades.

English III-Mr. Harris

Advanced Placement English- Mr. Harris

This course continues the learning begun in the previous year in English III.

Students are provided with further reading experience and the opportunity to improve their overall reading skills and appreciation of quality literature.  Literary terms learned previously will be repeated and new terms will be introduced as the students read selected pieces of literature.  More British authors are introduced in this course.

Additionally, students continue to be offered the opportunity to improve their writing so that they will be able to confidently express themselves using the written word.  Students are asked to demonstrate skills acquired in the previous year and to demonstrate newly acquired learning to produce longer pieces of writing.

Students will acquire basic skills in both reading and writing as they progress through English I through English IV; these skills build one upon another, allowing students to acquire ever-increasing competency as they progress through grades.

Journalism- Mr. Apfelbeck

Journalism is a yearlong course designed to apply reading and writing skills learned in the English classroom in print and web-based media. 

Students publish a print newspaper for the school and maintain a website for students, parents, and the community.  Each student is expected to produce at least one story with photographs every two weeks written in a standard news style about a topic of interest to the school community. 

Students will also discuss various issues involved with the media, including first amendment rights, libel, accuracy, and the use of media in the public schools.  Students will have access to a digital camera and will be expected to handle the camera in a mature manner and to produce good quality pictures for publication.

Language Arts Fundamentals- Mr. Apfelbeck

This course is designed to help students pass the writing portion of the high school qualifying exam (the HSQE). 

Instruction will be given to improve basic writing skills, with emphasis being placed upon expository and narrative writing.  Students will review grammar rules and study the simple mechanics of good writing.  Students will work and study individually and in a group to achieve unit objectives.

Students will be evaluated on class participation, written work, and daily assignments and/or tests.
